Motorola Droid(US) / Milestone(EU)

For Christmas this year I was so lucky to get a new mobile-phone, and not just any mobile-phone but the brand new smartphoneMotorola Milestone. This device comes with Android 2.0 and was the first of its kind to have the newest version. Now that Nexus One is released we are eagerly awaiting the 2.1 version that shipped with Nexus One. And in case anyone wondered why the device is so similar to Motorola Droid, its because its the same device but with a different radio to fit with the European GSM radio frequencies. Oh and it has something that the Droid users cry about, it has Multitouch! Anyway I'm not here to write about all the different functions of the phone, but to write what I think after a 3week hands-on experience. So after a few weeks I sit with a positive impression of the phone, but there are still some things that slightly bothers me.

  • Battery time. As with all smartphones, its a power drainer. If I have Roaming turned on during the entire day I can barely go through the day without recharging. With Roaming turned off the battery lasts little over a day.
  • Facebook sync. One of the reasons I bought this phone was because of a feature i though was really cool. Namely the Facebook contact synchronization feature which the Droid has. However for some reason this feature doesn't work on the Milestone yet. I'm sure this could easily be fixed and is Facebooks fault for not delivering a proper application for Milestone, but as of today it does not work.
  • No rooting capabilities. No one has been able to root the Milestone yet, and its annoying because there are some features id like to remove from the phone such as Corporate Mail and Calendar. And for some reason my clock is 30seconds too fast according to NTP, but i need root access to set the time that accurately.
  • Camera problems. Like many have mentioned before the Droid and Milestone device has some problems with the camera according to what month cycle or something your in. This means the camera's autofocus function works perfectly one month, and the next not. This is a really STUPID and annoying problem, and I can only hope that the people involved get a fix out ASAP.

So as you can see, theres not really any big issues with the phone and there arent really any reasons as of why you shouldnt by the device. On a scale from 1 to 10 on how happy I am about the phone, im probably at 9. The last 1 are the reasons mentioned above. Here's some pictures of the device.

If you want to read some reviews about the phone here are some links that's worth checking out.
