Motorola Milestone – Root access

Yes i know that rooting the Milestone isn’t “news”, however I personally ran into some difficulties when trying to root after the Android 2.1 update. Why do I want root access you ask? Well that’s simple, I live in a country without access to the paid Android Market, and using root access i can use applications such as MarketEnabler to gain this access. Also having root opens the possibility to use wifi tethering, and changing system files (like moving/deleting the stupid corporate calendar etc). Anyway, here’s a easy step by step tutorial on how to flash your Milestone with a rootable recovery image, and then applying the root “patch”. You will need Windows to do this, preferably XP, but in any case it has to be 32-bit as the 64-bit isn’t very cooperative (It couldn’t even find my phone..)

Preparing

  1. Download the root update/patch, http://www.sera-apps.de/milestone_root.zip
  2. Download and install RSD Lite 4.6
  3. Download and install Motorola Mobile Phone USB Drivers (for Windows®)
  4. Download the sbf image we’re flashing, http://www.mediafire.com/?jzzjmmrvwkz
  5. Rename the root update in step 1 to “Update.zip” and upload it to the root of your memory card.

Flashing the rootable recovery

  1. Reboot your phone, and hold Directional-Pad UP at the very beginning to get into the bootloader.
  2. Open up RSD Lite, locate your image and hit start, when the phone reboots hold D-Pad UP again to get into the bootloader (if you don’t do this, the phone most likely won’t finish flashing).
  3. Okay, you’ve finished flashing and RSD Lite says “PASS” in the Result tab, the next step is very important.
  4. To be able to apply the root patch without doing step 1-3 again, you have to get into the recovery menu and apply it, without starting the android OS.

Applying root update/patch

  1. Turn off your phone after completing step 4 in the recovery procedure, now hold the camera button and press the power on button. Keep holding them both until you see a unfamiliar screen (recovery screen).
  2. Press volume up and the camera button a couple of times until a list pops up
  3. Press the “apply the update.zip from sdcard” (or something similar to that)
  4. When its finished it should say something like “applying root, finished”. If the message contains a error message, and says its aborted you’ve done something wrong.
  5. Reboot your phone and enjoy having root access.

I did something wrong *sadface*

  1. Re download the root update, change its name and move it to the sdcard again.
  2. Redo all the procedures, DO NOT SKIP ANYTHING (chances are, you did).
